Lessons Learned #1: Sometimes you just have to get started.
A former colleague once told me a story about the stairway in his house that was in desperate need of repair. He knew what had to be done to fix it, but he somehow never got around to actually starting the project. Then, one Friday, he walked in the front door of his house to find a pile of splintered wood before him. His wife had taken a sledgehammer and obliterated the bottom three steps. He finished the project that weekend.
For many of us, mustering the mental energy to tackle a big task can feel overwhelming. Sometimes we need someone to wield that metaphorical hammer and force us to get started.
For almost 10 years, I had the pleasure of calling the good people at CQ Roll Call my colleagues. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from so many wonderful professionals (and also from my own mistakes). To all of you, I say thank you. Thank you for the honor of working with you, and a special thank you to those who always picked up the hammer.
Over the past few months, I’ve spoken with a number of friends and business associates who have started their own companies. During these discussions, I realized that I enjoy sharing the many lessons I have learned during my 25+ years of software development, and, more to the point, I discovered that others find great value in my experiences.
So, if I can help you by sharing some of my many lessons learned, drop me a line, give me a call, or check out germainconsulting.com. I promise to bring my hammer.
